What does a rattling noise on start-up mean?

A brief rattle when you first start a cold engine is a classic sign of a worn timing chain or a tired chain tensioner. It is worth checking promptly, as a chain that jumps a tooth can cause serious damage. Call 01489 662025 and we will take a look.

Do timing chains need replacing like cambelts?

Timing chains do not have a fixed replacement interval the way belts do, and many last the life of the engine. However they can stretch and wear, and the guides and tensioner can fail, so they are not maintenance-free. Regular oil changes help them last.

Can a worn timing chain damage my engine?

Yes. If a worn chain jumps or snaps, the valves and pistons can collide, causing expensive damage. That is why a rattle or a timing-related warning light should be checked rather than ignored.

How is a timing chain problem diagnosed?

We listen to the engine, read any fault codes and check for play and chain stretch. From there we tell you honestly whether it needs a chain kit or something simpler. We look after drivers right across Eastleigh.

How much does timing chain work cost?

It varies with the engine, as some are a bigger job than others, so we give you a clear written quote first. We won't be beaten on price or quality, so call 01489 662025 for a figure.

Timing Chain

Timing Chain Done Properly

A timing chain does the same vital job as a cambelt, keeping your engine in time, but it is made of metal and lives inside the engine, lubricated by oil. Chains can last a long time, yet they do stretch and wear, and a worn chain or tensioner can rattle, jump a tooth, or in the worst case cause serious engine damage.

Our mechanics in Eastleigh diagnose timing chain noises properly, usually a rattle on cold start-up, and tell you honestly what is going on. Where a chain, guides or tensioner need replacing, we do the work with quality parts and set the timing precisely so your engine runs sweetly again.

“I've used this company for years and years. They are honest (if a tyre doesn't need changing, they'll tell you) and keenly priced. The chap behind the desk must have been there for much of his working life: a familiar and trusted face. After years of buying all my tyres here, my trusty van is also serviced by them now, to the same high standard. You really can run a garage business with integrity and fairness; this place is the proof. Recommended without hesitation.”
